Questions You May Have Before Starting Therapy
How do I choose a therapist?
There is no universally better choice. Your preferences may be influenced by your experiences, relationships or simply who you feel more comfortable with. Sometimes, working with a therapist whose characteristics you find more difficult to relate to, can also offer an opportunity to explore and understand those relationship patterns.
How will I know whether you are the right therapist for me?
It is normal to feel nervous or uncertain at first. The initial session is an opportunity to see whether you feel listened to, understood and comfortable with how I work. You can ask questions and take time to decide whether you would like to continue.
What if I don’t know what to say, find it difficult to talk, or become emotional?
That’s completely okay. You may have something specific in mind or simply feel that something isn’t quite right. There is no pressure to know what to say or explain yourself perfectly. Silence, uncertainty and strong emotions are all welcome, and we will approach whatever comes up together, at a pace that feels right for you.
What if my problems do not feel serious enough for therapy?
You do not need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to come to therapy. You might feel stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected, want to understand recurring patterns, or simply want to know yourself better. If something matters to you, it is worth exploring.
Will you tell me what to do?
My role is not to make decisions for you, but to help you understand yourself and your choices more clearly. I may offer different perspectives, practical tools or gently challenge certain patterns, while supporting you in finding your own way forward.
What if I disagree with you or something does not feel helpful?
I encourage you to tell me. Being able to talk openly about disagreement, discomfort or what is not working is an important part of therapy and can deepen our understanding of what you need. You’re not expected to agree with me to protect my feelings.
Is online therapy as effective as meeting in person?
Yes, both in-person and online therapy are effective. Online therapy can offer a meaningful and connected therapeutic relationship, while providing greater flexibility and accessibility. You will need a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable speaking freely.
Is everything I say confidential?
What you share is treated confidentially, within the professional and legal requirements of my practice and clinical supervision. There are limited exceptions, particularly where there is a serious risk of harm or disclosure is legally required. I will explain these boundaries clearly before we begin.
What if I want to stop therapy?
You are always free to end therapy. Where possible, I encourage us to discuss the decision and decide together how many sessions to schedule to work towards an ending. This gives us the opportunity to reflect on our work together and create a meaningful ending.
